Oktatás célja
The course offers and introductory overview of African American history. The objective of the course is to have the students trace the history of African Americans from Ancestral Africa to North America, from Slavery to the Black Revolution and Black Power. We will discuss the cultural, social, and political status of the African American community throughout the history of the United States, focusing on such important periods like Colonial America, the American Revolution, the Antebellum Period, the Civil War, the Reconstruction Era, World War I, the Roaring Twenties, the Great Depression, World War II, and the Civil Rights Movement.
Tantárgy tartalma
The course introduces the history of African Americans by discussing their ancestry, the land of their ancestors, before examining the slave trade and slavery in Colonial America. The American Revolutionary War is a further topic that we deal with, concentrating on the role of African Americans in the fight for independence and the issue of slavery in light of the revolutionary philosophy. The Peculiar Institution is examined by discussing the slave codes, the plantation system in the Antebellum South, the abolitionist movement, and the underground railroad. The Civil War and the Reconstruction Era is a further issue that we will study as African Americans pursued their democratic rights, but faced disfranchisement and the victory of white supremacy. The Harlem Renaissance and the New Deal Era is another topic of interest that we will tackle before we discuss the Double Victory of the African American community. The fight for Double Victory explores the role of African Americans on the Home Front, as part of the arsenal of democracy, and their military service during World War II. The course will conclude with the Civil Rights Movement in order to address the postwar dilemmas faced by the African American community.
