- The aim of the course is to provide an overview of the cultural anthropological research traditions and research methods of Gypsy cultures and communities in such a way that, based on the knowledge acquired here, the students are able to initiate their own empirical research, even with the aim of a final thesis in the undergraduate course. The aim of the subject is to get to know and analyze the main academic and everyday discourses related to Gypsies from a conceptual and content perspective. Within the framework of the subject, moving along the most typical external stereotypes affecting Gypsy and Gypsy communities, we are looking for the emic answer to what the "reality content" of these stereotypes really is, what are the causes and functions of these phenomena, as well as how Gypsy communities react to these stereotypes, what coexistence strategies they pursue with the outside world, what kind of classification system is created, etc.

- Approach, methods, main representatives and results of cultural anthropological Gypsy research. Who, what is a gypsy? The image of Gypsies and the characteristics of stereotyping. The stereotype of the "stateless, nationally alien Gypsy". Disintegration, dissimilation and stereotyping in history. I. the period of feudalism (from the beginning to 1848). The stereotype of the "stateless, nationally alien Gypsy". Disintegration, dissimilation and stereotyping in history. II. the period of early capitalism up to and including the Pharraj period (1848 – 1944). The stereotype of the "stateless, nationally alien Gypsy". Disintegration, dissimilation and stereotyping in history. III. the period of socialism (1945 – 1989). The stereotype of the "stateless, nationally alien Gypsy". Disintegration, dissimilation and stereotyping in history. ARC. after the regime change (from 1990). The stereotype of the "unclean gypsy". The boundary-forming role of purity in identity. The stereotype of the "living gypsy". Economic strategies: what is visible and what is invisible. The stereotype of the "uneducable gypsy". Gypsyness as an educational problem. The stereotype of the "loud gypsy". Language, communication, religion. The stereotype of the "staying gypsy". Premodern forms of customs and social roles. The stereotype of the "unsuitable gypsy". The wanderer, if settled, was segregated, gypsies living in settlements. Variants of "Gypsy-Hungarian" coexistence.
- Assessment method
- Assessment and evaluation system: colloquium ticket. The basic guidelines for the evaluation of student work are laid down in the ELTE BTK faculty regulations, which state that the instructor selects the means of evaluation of student work in view of the nature of the knowledge and skills imparted. you can get it individually or as part of a group.
