Oktatás célja
This course examines the more practical and pragmatic aspects of anthropological theories and methods. We will focus on the nature and structure of inquiry, theoretical paradigms, modes of operations and various means through which we conduct analysis. Our aim is to turn theory and methods into tools that can be used practically in the field, cognitive tasks, literature-based research and during the writing process. To reify the classroom, discussion-based presentation of information, we will go into the field to conduct a semester-long research project during which you will have the opportunity to employ, practically, the skills and techniques that make up the anthropological toolkit.

Számonkérés és értékelés
COURSE REQUIRMENTS: Assigned Text: Each student will be responsible for ALL the assigned readings!!!! Each student is required to read the assigned articles BY October 31, 2022. Each student must write ONE RESPONSE PAPER PER TOPIC and upload it to Canvas BEFORE the deadline. Label your responses in a clear and easily understandable format, number them, put them in a folder, zip/compress the folder and upload it to Canvas. Your written responses should analyze the texts’ content, arguments, logic and critically consider its academic validity, potential usefulness and the insights being offered by the author’s research. Participation/Preparedness: Each of you are expected to participate in all activities fully, honestly and with integrity. In other words, each of you must pull her/his own weight, including all tasks such as reading, note taking, writing and presenting. Fieldwork Project:  Each of you will be responsible for conducting research in the field. Your fieldwork MUST be based on you MA thesis. This is an opportunity for you to begin the research component of your MA thesis. Depending on your topic and the nature of your project, fieldwork may include participant observation (if possible and/or applicable), interviews, surveys, and even literature/archive-based research if that is what is needed for your project. To make sure this research can be done successfully within the confines and restrictions of the course, you should address only basic questions and with limited scope. However, your goal is to employ concrete methods and to interweave established theoretical models into your analyses. For the purposes of this course, it is not possible to complete your entire thesis research, and, therefore, I strongly recommend that you focus on a single, specific portion of your overall research. You must then relate this to your research question; decide on the theoretical perspective that will be used in your analysis; and then choose the most appropriate methodology for their field research. You can ONLY begin your fieldwork AFTER you have submitted your response papers by October 31st AND your proposals for your fieldwork project by November 1st. The results of this fieldwork project should be made into a presentation, and uploaded to Canvas by January 10th. Consultation: I will make myself available for consultation at any time. If you, as an individual, or as a group, have questions, concerns, or simply want to have a discussion, please email me and we will arrange a time to meet online via MS teams at the earliest possible time, or in person. DO NOT send me a message in Canvas because I never remember to check it. Instead, email me using my Gmail address
