SYLLABUS: Research Related Ethical Issues in Cultural Anthropology - Ethics in an Age of Terror and Genocide Overview I borrowed the title from Kristen Renwick Monroe, but while the narrative of her 2010 book (that will be one of the readings for this semester) relies on the events of the Holocaust, we will broaden our focus and will look at current issues and events, the nature of which are still debated. Examining these debates, and the critical deconstruction of the participants multi-levelled realities, we will aim to understand how mass violence and genocide occurs, and how people act and react under extreme conditions, and how they create their “morally superior” reality. The current arguments and debates will also allow us to examine how research can be conducted under the pressure of multiple - often contradictory - moral perspectives, and what the researcher can do to avoid becoming yet another unwitting agent in the course of events.
