- The aim of the course is to introduce students into the sociological inquiry of youth, social theories on youth and the place of young people in society
- Course content
- This course provides an overview of the sociological understanding of youth and adolescence, focusing on the social issues that young people face in modern society and vice versa: how young people are seen from different social gropus and how the notion of youth is socially constructed. The first several classes will focus on the notion and the conception of youth and on such notions as “generation”, “adolescence” and “transition”. Additionally, we will explore the experiences young people have with social institutions – most importantly with education and culture, but also with inequalities, media representation of youth and the effects of globalization on young people.
- Assessment method
- The grades for the course will be composed of a grade for a written test and a written exam due during exam period. Topic of the exams are the material discussed during class + the readings for each week.
