- a) Knowledge: During the course, students will learn about the history of medieval Hungary. The primary goal is not for students to memorize the chronology of events covered in the course, but rather to see these events in context. They will become familiar with the unique characteristics of the development of the medieval Hungarian Kingdom, viewed within the context of Central Europe. b) Abilities: After completing the seminar, students will be able to describe, interpret, and contextualize the turning points of medieval Hungarian history. They will be familiar with the relevant modern literature (monographs, collections of studies, independent studies). c) Attitude: After completing the course, students will be able to discuss issues with an open, empathetic, yet sufficiently critical attitude. d) Autonomy and responsibility: Students will be able to independently compare their own views with previous research findings, formulate their own views, present them in detail, and argue for them independently.
- Course content
- The subject matter provides an overview of the six centuries between 895 and the Battle of Mohács, covering the most important events (the Hungarian conquest, the founding of the state, the Mongol invasion, the fragmentation of the late Árpád dynasty, the Anjou and Luxembourg dynasties on the Hungarian throne, the Hunyadi era, the Jagiellonian era). Where relevant, the topic seeks to link Hungarian history with the history of other countries, e.g., in the case of the Polish-Hungarian personal unions and the reign of Sigismund of Luxembourg. As the course covers not only classical events but also issues related to social, economic, and cultural history, students will gain insight into these areas as well.
- Assessment method
- Prepare a presentation and give a short lecture on one of the topics discussed during the semester.
