- COURSE TITLE: Cultures of Desire in Hellenistic Rome and Early Christianity: Michel Foucault's History of Sexuality volumes 3 and 4 COURSE DESCRIPTION: In this seminar course we will read the two final volumes of Michel Foucault's highly influential four-volume study, History of Sexuality - which are also the last books that Foucault completed before his death in 1984. Students will be briefly introduced to Foucault's idea of the history of sexuality at the start of his monumental venture - in History of Sexuality volume 1, on modern Europe. After that volume was published, Foucault's thinking underwent a profound change - which is reflected in his History of Sexuality volume 2, on ancient Greece. Once students have been introduced to this shift in Foucault's thinking, & to his new coordinates in the later volumes of his History of Sexuality - we will read, together, volume 3 on sexuality in imperial Rome, and volume 4 on sexuality in early Christianity. Our reading of volume 4 will be supplemented by select texts from the New Testament and several other early Christian collections. Evaluation will be based on attendance and participation, and a term paper of 1500-3000 words. COURSE INSTRUCTOR: David Lloyd Dusenbury, Visiting Professor
