Learning outcomes
The course is an introduction to the Roman coins that were used in the Barbaricum, i.e. not within the Roman Empire. The various barbarian tribes occasionally minted coins for themselves, but it was much more convenient for them to use the Roman ones even centuries longer than the Romans. The course will tackle interesting questions regarding the use of coins in a non-monetary society, as well as will give hands-on knowledge of the coins through their identification. This will be preceded by an introduction to the basic ancient numismatics and the most common types occurring in the Barbaricum.
Course content
Roman coinage in non-Roman context
Assessment method
The work done during the classes will form the basis for the grading.
