Tantárgy tartalma
This course explores the notions of travel, exile, and emigration in Hungarian texts. Its timeline covers Renaissance and late humanism, early Enlightenment, Romanticism, classical modernism, and avant-garde, also providing through its main topics an overview of the history of Hungarian literature. It places special emphasis on the Hungarian perception of Western Europe (especially Paris) and the New World, but it also includes the analyses of Hungarian encounters with the oriental Other. Exploring travel literature, historical accounts, novels, and poetry, it demonstrates that travel was not only a form of learning, but also a historical constraint which shaped Hungarian communities around the world and their representation in literature. These works will be starting point to discuss several questions: How did travellers and emigrants deal with cultural differences? How do their texts construct and deconstruct the commonplaces about the Eastern European inferiority complex? How did foreign surrounding make them reconsider their relationship to their mother tongue?
