Oktatás célja
Introduction into the terminology, sources and methods of onomastics; understanding the nature of various name types and the linguistic, social and cultural embeddedness of names. a) knowledge – The student knows the typical research questions, basic terms and methods of Hungarian and international onomastics. – The student is familiar with the main functions of proper names and the characteristics of the Hungarian and European  name stocks, name-giving and name use. – The student knows the crucial characteristics of the European name stock embedded in their wider international context. b) skills – The student is able to interpret the linguistic features, historical, social and cultural embeddedness of certain phenomena related to the name-giving, name use and name stock of their country. – The student is able to pick and apply the most typical methods eligible for the approach of actual onomastic questions and practical problems related to onomastics. c) attitudes – The student accepts that phenomena connected to proper names are linguistically, historically, socially, geographically and culturally determined and varied, thus makes a conscious effort to develop an inter- and multicultural vision. – The student endeavours to recognise and understand the connections between onomastics and other fields of science as well as to utilise multidisciplinary approach in their own professional activity. d) autonomy and responsibility – The student bears responsibility of ethical and professional responsibility of their own and their peers’ work and discussions. – The student deliberately represents the approaches and methods used in their onomastic work and accepts different theoretic, terminological and methodological characteristics of other fields of science.
Tantárgy tartalma
The place of onomastics (i.e. name studies) in the system of the fields of science and its interdisciplinary relations. An overview of its major subfields, research topics, terminology and methodology. Being named or nameless, the fundamental functions of proper names. Synchronic and diachronic anthroponomactics and toponomactics; geographical, social and cultural features and connections of the name stocks, name-giving and name use, especially in a European context, focusing on Hungarian names. Typical questions of applied onomastics: problems connected to the translation of names; legal relations of names; stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination based on personal names etc.
