- a) knowledge – The student is familiar with the typical research areas, topics, and methods of applied linguistics. – The student is familiar with the main research areas, topics, and methods of speech research. – The student is familiar with the major topics in applied linguistics related to proper names, as well as the issues and methods associated with them. b) skills – The student is able to interpret issues in applied linguistics in all their diversity and complexity. – The student is able to select and apply the most appropriate methods for addressing current issues and practical problems in applied linguistics. c) attitudes – The student applies their knowledge of language-related phenomena and processes to understand contemporary social and cultural phenomena, changes, and individual language use. – The student strives to recognize and understand the connections between applied linguistics and other academic disciplines, and to apply a multidisciplinary approach in their professional work. d) autonomy and responsibility – The student bears ethical and professional responsibility for their own work, and the discourse they engage in. – The student consciously applies the approaches and methods used in their research and acknowledge the differing theoretical, terminological, and methodological characteristics of other disciplines.
- Course content
- The course presents the applications of research results in phonetics and psycholinguistics in teaching methodology, speech-language pathology, speech and language technology, translation, and in everyday life. It covers areas such as research methodology in speech sciences, atypical first language acquisition, assessment and treatment of speech and language disorders, elderly speech and language symptoms of dementia, bilingualism and foreign language learning, interpreting and translation, written language acquisition, and applications in speech- and language technology. It also deals with applied linguistic topics regarding proper names: legal regulation of their use (e.g. name-giving, name changes, names of married people), translation of proper names, stereotypes and prejudices based on names etc.
