Learning outcomes
The course aims at getting the students acquainted with the major actors in shaping American foreign policy, as well as the different ideas and doctrines which defined the theory and practice of American foreign policy since the birth of the Republic.
Course content
The course offers an overview of U.S. diplomatic history and the theory and practice of the foreign policy making process. In the first part of the course, students are invited to explore foreign policy from the era of isolationism to globalization by examining the changes in U.S. national interests over time, including the challenges of U.S. foreign policy making in the 21st century. The second part of the course deals with the process of foreign policy formulation from the constitutional dimensions to the actors involved.
Assessment method
Final grades will be based on the combined results of the mid-term and the end-term written exams (50-50%). Both the mid-term and the final exam are going to be composed of identification questions and an essay based on the material of the seminars and the assigned readings.
