BBN-AME-321 The History of Asian Americans: the Chinese and Japanese American Community 1. Aim of the course: The curriculum has several objectives. The course introduces the history of Asian Americans and their cultural, social, and political status in the United States. During the semester we examine the Asian American identity and narrative. We analyze such concepts as the push and pull factors, assimilation, acculturation, Americanization, Nativism, multiculturalism, and the theory of the “model minority”. Students will study the immigration history and policies of the United States through the experiences of Asian immigrants. A further aim of the course is to develop critical thinking in the field of ethnic studies to better understand current social issues/debates in regards to immigration, ethnic identity, multiculturalism, racial profiling, racial stereotypes, prejudice, hate crimes and discrimination.
Tantárgy tartalma
2. Content: The course explores Asian American identity through the history of the Chinese and Japanese American community, how the Asian American narrative was constructed in the United States. During the semester we will examine and discuss important historical events from the perspective of the selected Asian ethnic communities, starting from the end of the 19th century, the era of Nativism, and ending the semester by analyzing contemporary issues that Asian America has to face. The class material – assigned readings, primary documents, oral history, and films – are intended to inspire discussions and debates on such vital issues as immigration, naturalization, citizenship, racial prejudice, anti-Asian sentiments, Chinese and Japanese communities, assimilation vs. acculturation, multiculturalism vs. Nativism, social conflicts, racial dynamics, Asian narratives, and civil liberties.

3. Assessment and grading: Assessment: the grading will be based on a successfully passed written exam. Exam: the exam will assess the student’s knowledge of the course material and the recommended literature. The exam is going to be composed of terminology, multiple choice and identification questions, and an essay based on the material covered during the lectures and in the assigned readings. In order to pass the course you need to achieve the minimum requirement of 60% on the exam. Attendance: regular attendance at the lectures is mandatory (no more than 3 absences) for completing the course, an attendance sheet will be passed around at the beginning of each class to verify the attendance of the students.
