Oktatás célja
This course aims to help students formulate and possibly answer the question whether it is possible, or indeed desirable, to make a film version of a piece of (anti-)utopian fiction which is both faithful to the spirit of the literary original and a remarkable film in its own right. In short, can fidelity and quality be simultaneously achieved when a work of utopian fiction is adapted to the screen? To answer this, students will be asked to read, and discuss in class, some key texts of adaptation theory as well as selections from the classic literature of utopian and dystopian studies.
Tantárgy tartalma
Five to six utopian and/or dystopian novels to be read at home and discussed in class, and the analytic screening, in class, of selected episodes from the films based on the novels in question
Számonkérés és értékelés
“Practical mark” on the basis of class-to-class activity (continuous participation in the discussions, a 10 to 15 minute presentation and, possibly, occasional quizzes), and a major home essay related to the presentation.
