- This course aims to: · familiarise students with the history and context of Australian film · identify major thematic and generic concerns in Australian filmmaking · familiarise students with the context of cinema production in Australia · to shed light on the issues underlying the social problems depicted in the films provide tools for the analysis and appreciation of Australian cinema

- Course content: · Contextual history of Australian film · Australian Cinema in the international stage · Representations of the land in Australian movies · Bush-city conflict · Issues of ethnicity and alternative sexual orientation in movies of the 1990s (Priscilla, Queen of the Desert) · Asian representations in Australian film (Japanese Story) · The changing representations of Aborigines on the screen (Jedda, Night cries) · Multicultural topics and genres · The relationship between the ’bush’ and identity

- Assessment of the course will be based on: a) Attendance, participation b) short presentation on a selected topic c) seminar paper (6-8 pages) d) short film review, viewing journal
