Learning outcomes
The aim of the course is to provide an insight into the mechanisms of British popular culture through the filmic representations of iconic characters. During the course of the seminar the close reading of the filmic texts will be complemented by the comparative examination of their socio-cultural contexts.
Course content
The course introduces the students to the dialogue between different cultural registers through the study of the filmic appearance of four British iconic characters: the Spy (James Bond), the Detective (e.g. Sherlock Holmes and Miss Marple), the Bard (William Shakespeare) and the British Monarch. An interdisciplinary approach is favoured, combining film theory with literary and cultural studies.
Assessment method
Completing the weekly assignments: watching the films, reading the theoretical texts, and submitting short weekly feedbacks on the films. 6-8 page essay on a chosen topic. Active in-class participation.
