- Teaching objectives -Extend and structure knowledge of the naturalist movement and the short story genre. -Understand the short stories on offer and analyse their adaptation for the screen. -Construct a personal visual interpretation of a literary object. Skills worked on -Comparative literary and multidisciplinary analysis. -Establishing links between works. -Learning the tools of film analysis. -Matching artistic and literary perspectives. -Visual and artistic interpretation of a written work.
- Course content
- Under the impetus of Zola, naturalism first saw the light of day in fictional writings, before rapidly attracting the interest of the big and small screens. The short story, a short genre characterised by the punch line, was long sidelined, with film-makers often preferring the great novels that made the names of France's greatest naturalist writers. Yet these stories continue to attract attention, not least because of their visual aspect, which is often dramatic or funny. Their screen adaptations modernised naturalism throughout the twentieth century, right up to the very recent Chez Maupassant series. How do these interpretations renew our view of so-called naturalist writing? The aim of the course will be to carry out comparative analyses between naturalist short stories and their on-screen interpretations: the idea is to understand the transfer between a fictional text and a cinematic or televisual work in order to be able to carry out the adaptation work oneself. The final aim of the course will be to propose an interpretation of your own by developing your creative skills freely through the interpretation of an extract or an entire short story using an animated visual medium. This involves writing a short video and directing it. Methodological support will be provided throughout the course.
- Assessment method
- Validation of the course : -A comparative analysis of text and film interpretation (coefficient 1). Oral presentation of a project for the end-of-semester assessment. (coefficient 1) -End of term assessment: cinematographic interpretation of a short story or extract from a French naturalist short story. Possibility of group work (coefficient 3). -Homework: homework is compulsory at every session. Even if you are absent, you must send an e-mail with your homework (coefficient 1).
