- Objectives: Rather than offering a historical overview of the evolution of literary criticism and theories, the main aim of this course is to provide students at the beginning of their degree with points of reference in the methodology and terminology of the various modern critical discourses. Analysis of the principles of the different approaches should enable students of French literature to: -become familiar with the major critical issues -be familiar with the main contemporary critical trends -understand and use precise scientific terminology in their work to understand and use precise scientific terminology in their work -to have access to the bibliographical references essential to all research
- Course content
- The course consists of four main units: Introduction. Literary enunciation. Typology of discourse. Literary genres. What is criticism? Definitions and typologies. From the origins of criticism to scholarly criticism. (2 hours). II. Textual criticism 1 The Russian formalists and the definition of textual criticism 2 Structural analysis of narrative 3.poetics 4 Stylistics 5 Theories of text (5 hours) III. Hermeneutic or interpretive criticism 1. sociocriticism 2.thematic criticism 3.psychoanalytically inspired criticism and semiotics 4. hermeneutic criticism and phenomenology (4 hours) IV. New directions 1. Postmodern criticism 2. The new rhetoric 3. Deconstruction (2 hours)
