- Learning objectives - to become familiar with the main lexicographical sources of the Dutch language, lexicographical concepts and lexicographical terminology. - learning a more efficient way of acquiring lexicographical information - expansion of the academic vocabulary
- Course content
- Description The study of dictionaries gives an insight into language variation (standard language - regional language, group languages, registers of style, etc.) and into language change (foreign words - bastard words, neologisms) and the understanding of linguistic norms and standards (barbarism, purism). After introducing the different types of dictionaries (e.g. explanatory, phraseological, synonym dictionaries, etc.), attention is paid to the use of lexicographic products following various translation and paraphrase exercises. Besides expanding (academic) vocabulary, the aim of the exercises is to help students arrive at a more effective study method.
