- During the semester, students are introduced to important literary innovations of the twentieth century. In the lecture, they gain knowledge about social changes, literary movements, literary magazines, and authors and poets who have shaped twentieth-century literature. The lecture is closely linked to the seminar, where students analyze one or more literary works each week. By the end of the course, students are familiar with key figures and innovations within the literary field of Flanders and the Netherlands that have been decisive for modern Dutch-language literature. In addition, they have a clear understanding of the relationship between literature and social change.
- Course content
- The twentieth century brought major social and political changes. Technological developments, the decolonization of the Netherlands and Belgium, the First and Second World Wars, and the Holocaust are just a few examples. How does the literature of the Low Countries reflect these changes? What are the milestones of twentieth-century Dutch-language literature? These questions form the basis of this lecture. Each week, students are introduced to new literary phenomena, authors, and poets who have shaped modern Dutch-language literature.
- Assessment method
- Mandatory attendance, maximum 3 missed classes. Short tests on required literature. Oral exam during the examination period.
