Learning outcomes
This lecture offers an introduction to adaptation theory using contemporary literary texts and their cinematic adaptations. Getting acquainted with Dutch-language literary works on a variety of subjects and their cinematic adaptations. Learning to apply the conceptual apparatus of adaptation theory during the comparative analysis of book and film adaptation.
Course content
During the lectures, cinematic adaptation is considered an interpretation of the original literary text: students study the relationship between the literary text and its cinematic adaptation from a narrative-analytical perspective. By the end of the semester, students are able to apply their knowledge and insights about theories of adaptations, to compare and analyze literary texts and their film adaptations, using the narrative-analytical conceptual apparatus and terminology. Students are expected to read a Dutch-language novel every second week, the film adaptation of which will be watched in class. In this way, students are introduced to 5 Dutch or Flemish novels and their film adaptations over the course of the semester. During the lessons, the literary works and their film adaptations are analyzed as independent cultural products. In addition, the novels and their cinematographic adaptations are systematically compared with each other using adaptation theory.
