- This course provides an introduction to adaptation theory through the study of various literary texts and their film adaptations. Cinematic adaptations are approached as interpretations of the original literary texts. Students examine the relationship between the literary work and its film adaptation from a narratological perspective. By the end of the course, students are able to apply knowledge and insights from adaptation theories to compare and analyze literary texts and their cinematic versions using narratological concepts and terminology.
- Course content
- Over the course of the semester, students will engage with five Dutch-language novels and their film adaptations. Each week, one primary text and its corresponding film adaptation are discussed. Students are expected to read the book and watch the film adaptation of the week in preparation for the seminar. In class, the literary works and their adaptations are analyzed as independent cultural products. Additionally, the novels and their cinematic adaptations are systematically compared using adaptation theory.
- Assessment method
- Sufficient attendance (maximum of three absences) is required to complete the course. Students are expected to read all literary works in Dutch or in a Hungarian translation. The semester concludes with an oral exam. Final grades are based on both the short quizzes and performance on the oral exam: Short quizzes: 50% Oral exam: 50%
