- The aim of the course is to outline the main stages in the development of the Italian literary language. Methods used: lecture - teacher presentation, interpretative commentary, illustration with selected texts. Competences: knowledge of the varieties and development of the literary language will enable students to interpret correctly the texts read in the history of literature lessons and to understand the linguistic situation of Italy today.

- Course description: 1. The transitional period of Latin-Italian development (phonetic-morphological features) 2. The emergence of Neo-Latin literacy in Italy 3. The emergence and leadership of the Florentine literary language in the 14th century - Dante 4. The emergence of poetic language - Petrarch 5. The transformation of humanism and written language in the 15th century 6. Bembo and the canonisation of literary language in the 16th century 7. The spread of the norm in the 16th century 8. The Italian language in practice: the use of the semi-literate 9. Manzoni and the creation of a unified Italian language in the 19th century 10. The emergence of modern Italian after Manzoni

- Assessment: a written examination at the end of the semester on the topics and texts covered in the course.
