- Knowledge: Has a language knowledge of at least C1 level. Knows the particularities of the Portuguese and Brazilian theatre and drama, is familiar with it’s main tendencies and authors Acquires a high level of autonomy regarding the main specific questions of the field as well as their background and interpretation. Skills: Able to find, read, review and analyze theoretical sources regarding a defined research area, able to plan and to achieve his/her own professional development, able to elaborate deep reflections on classroom and other experiences, willing to permanently improve professional and linguistic skills. Able to mediate between theatrical traditions and to develop intercultural competence. Able to develop his/her own personality and is open for the feedback of the others. Attitude: Considers important to continuously develop the knowledge and skills of students. Judges realistically his/her own role in the teaching of Portuguese language and culture. - Course content
- The aim of the course is to follow the evolution of Portuguese and Brazilian theatre and drama from the very beginnings until the 21th century. The course will start off with Gil Vicente’s theatrical experiments and then moves on to the Romantic era to understand to role of theatre in the socio-political dynamics of the 19th century. In Portugal Almeida Garret, whereas in Brazil Martins Pena are considered the founders of modern theatrical discourses, though the course will study side by side the plays of these two authors. Further on, we engage with the Modernist tradition through Fernando Pessoa’s O Marinheiro and Nelsos Rodrigues’ Vestido de Noiva to arrive finally to the contemporary Brazilian and Portuguese theatre scene (Miguel Castro Caldas, José Vieira Mendes, Patrícia Portela, Newton Moreno, Plínio Marcos, Silvia Gomez)
- Assessment method
- Oral presentation throughout the semester. Interpretation of a previously agreed contemporary literary text in the form of a final paper (12.000-16.000 characters).
