- The aim of the course is to give a general view on the main tendencies, authors and works of Portuguese and Brazilian cinema history Knowledge: Has a language knowledge of at least C1 level. Knows the main tendencies and authors of Portuguese and Brazilian cinema Understands the connections and the differences between Portuguese and Brazilian cinema Skills: Able to analyze films from the Portugues and Brazilian canon Able to understand the main social and political tensions played out in Portuguese and Brazilian cinema Able to situade Portuguese and Brazilian films within the internation canon of film history Attitude: Considers important the heritage of Portuguese and Brazilian cinema Knows the importance of social, racial and sexual emancipation
- Course content
- Through the interpretation of several paradigmatic films from the Portuguese and Brazilian canon the course offers a wide reflexion on some of the most relevant social, historical and political questions which haunt the reality of the two Lusophone nations. Departing from the question of the colonization (Alain Fresnot: Desmundo; Luís Alberto Pereira: Hans Staden; Nelson Pereira dos Santos: Como era gostoso o meu francês) we’ll move on with the representation of the colonial war and the post-colonial state (Pedro Costa: Casa de Lava; Margarida Cardoso: Costa dos Murmúrios; Manoel de Oliveira: Non ou a vã glória de mandar) and finish with questioning of the legacies of the past in XXth and XXIth century Portugal and Brazil (Glauber Rocha: Deus e o Diabo na Terra do Sol; Fellipe Gamarano Barbosa: Casa Grande; Maria de Medeiros: Capitães de Abril; Teresa Villaverde: Os Mutantes).
- Assessment method
- Interpretation of a previously agreed movie in the form of a final paper (12.000-16.000 characters).
