- The aim of the course is to give a general overview on the Portuguese and Brazilian avant-garde movements and to demonstrate their differences and similarities with the tendencies of the European avant-garde, hence, the course draws attention to the importance and the creativity of peripheral or alternate modernisms in the grand narrative of eurocentric Modernism. Knowledge Knows the the theory and the ideology of the avant-garde, knows its main tendencies and authors Can situate the avant-garde in the history of the revolution of literary and artistic modernism Knows the history, the main tendencies and groups of the Portugues and Brazilian avant-garde as well as their aims, programs and manifestos Recognizes the parallelisms and the differences between the Luzo-Brazilian avant-gardes and the European avant-garde tendencies Is aware of the historical, cultural, and socio-economic background of the Portuguese and Brazilian Modernismo, Concrete Poetry, Tropicalismo and Experimental Poetry Skills Can read and interpret avant-garde literary texts and artworks Is aware of the importance of the avant-garde in Portuguese and Brazilian culture Recognizes the deep connections between the modernist revolutions and national identity in the Lusophone cultural context Can compare the programs and the artworks of the Portuguese and Brazilian Modernismo with the characteristics of European avant-garde ouevres. - Course content
- Departing from a the main theories regarding the aesthetics of the avant-garde (Poggioli, Bürger, Calinescu, Williams, Bourdieu) the course traces the emergece of Portuguese and Brazilian Modernismo drawing their parallelisms and differences with the European historical avant-garde movements and their ideologies. We will follow the development and the history of the Portuguese and Brazilian avant-gardes, analyze closely the dinamics of their different movements and interpret their manifestos, paradigmatic texts and artworks. In the Portuguese context the focus will be on Fernando Pessoa’s different ’isms’ and the brief emergence of futurism (Almada Negreiros, Santa Rita Pintor) and later on we will carry on with the neoavant-gard experimental poetry of the 60’s (E. M. de Melo e Castro, Ana Hatherly), meanwhile in the Brazilian cultural frame we will discuss the contribution of Modernismo tot he discourse of national identity and after the so called heroic phase of the avant-garde in the 20’s will move towards the movement of Concrete Poetry and Tropicalismo.
