Early Portuguese literature from the beginning to the time of Gil Vicente. Main genres and authors: Gallego-Portuguese troubadour literature, hagiography, historiography, didactic prose and short prose works. This is the starting point of a monographic arc in the teaching of Portuguese literature in our department, integrated with the reading of texts.
Course content
Topic: Lessons 1 to 5: In this monographic introduction to the first period of Portuguese literature, I will first discuss the main themes of Gallego-Portuguese troubadour literature:  - Love songs, Provençal influence, channels of cultural transmission  - Friendship songs, parallel editing and feminism.  - The satirical genre: the sirventés and the cantiga de escárnio e maldizer.  - The troubadours and their companions (jograis, segreis, menestrais and soldadeiras). Topic: Lessons 6-12 Among the prose works, in addition to didactic works such as hagiographies, mystical plays and treatises on moral education, I will also refer to translations and 'transcriptions' of chivalric romances. At the same time, I will attempt to place early Portuguese literature in an Iberian and European context, exploring the universal and regional characteristics and values of the Middle Ages through a study of monastic and court cultures. I will divide the following smaller chapters into this theme:  - The lives of the saints, an example of everyday life.  - Celtic-Breton mythology and the Arthurian legend in Portugal.  - Fernão Lopes and the revolution in historiography.  - Old and new patrons: the monastery and the court.  - The pedagogical treatises of the Princes of the Order of Avis.
