- The aim of the course is to introduce students to the Portuguese "Golden Age" and its epochal works, and to provide an insight into the main literary phenomena between the Renaissance and Realism through the works of some of the most prominent authors.
- Course content
- Topics: 1. Portuguese Humanism - Pan-European Movement - Damião de Gois 2. Themes, forms and characteristics of the Portuguese Renaissance. 3. Camões' poetry, biography and biographers 4. The structure of Os Lusíadas. National epic and underlying ideologies 5. Sá de Miranda, António Ferreira, Bernardim Ribeiro: the revolution in poetic art, medieval genres and aesthetics 6. Gil Vicente and the end of medieval theatre 7. Literature of travel. The Pilgrimage of Fernão Mendes Pinto 8. The Renaissance in Latin Literature and Science: Garcia de Orta, Amatus Lusitanus, Pedro Nunes, Tomé Pires 9. Mannerism, Baroque, transformations and ruptures 10. The Ars Predicandi of Father Antonio Vieira and the Epanaphorae of Francisco Manuel de Melo
- Assessment method
- At least ten sonnets by Camőes, selected extracts from the Lusiades, two plays by Gil Vicente (Auto da Índia, Auto da Barca do Inferno) and a chapter from the work of Fernão Mendes Pinto must be read! Method of evaluation: Practical evaluation based on the results of two written essays and two essays on the reading list.
