- The principal aim of the course is to present a historical perspective on the evolution of Brazilian and African Portuguese language literatures from the beginning of the colonial period until the turn of the 20th century. The course offers hence an insight into the particularities of the different literary fields, highlighting their particularities, their specific context and their position in the Lusophone cultural sphere. The student will be able to follow the formation and the development of Brazilian and African literatures in the light of the economic and historical contexts and will have a wider perspective of the processes of colonization, colonial cultures, cultural autonomy and national identity. Knowledge: Knows the rules and the different registers of the oral and the written Portuguese language and can apply them effectively according to the linguistic context. Knows the cultural particularities of the Portuguese language countries, is familiar with the main artistic and cultural tendencies of the Lusophone world and it’s main authors, oeuvres and manifestations, including the elements of popular culture. Acquires a high level of autonomy regarding the main specific questions of the field as well as their background and interpretation. Skills: Able to use the Portuguese language in a fluent and appropriate way according to the linguistic context. Able to mediate between cultures and to develop intercultural competence. Able to develop his/her own personality and is open for the feedback of the others. Attitude: Strives to teach the student respectful attitudes towards the perspective and values of others. Considers important to continuously develop the knowledge and skills of students. Gives special importance to develop high tolerance regarding different nationalities and ethnicities
- Course content
- The course offers a perspectival view on the development of Brazilian and African Portuguese language literatures from the 16th century until the beginning of the 20th century. Regarding the evolution of Brazilian literature the course starts with the first colonial texts (Caminha, Gândavo, Soares de Souza, Vespucci, Staden, Léry, Thévet) and the literary activity of Jesuit priests (Nóbrega, Anchieta, Cardim) and then moves on to analyse the characteristics and the main authors of the Baroque (Bento Teixeira, Gregório de Matos, Padre Vieira) and the Arcadismo movement (Santa Rita Durão, Basílio da Gama). Entering the 19th century the main focus will be on the different generations of Romanticism (nationalists, ultra-romantics, abolicionist) and on the emergence of Realism and Naturalism (Aluísio de Azevedo, Adolfo Caminha, Inglês de Souza) and to conclude on the ground-breaking work of Machado de Assis. In the African context the lectures will explore the question of the formation of African Portuguese language literatures in Angola, Moçambique, Cape Verde, São Tomé and Príncipe during the colonial era. In order to get a deeper understanding of the literary tendencies and periods the course provides further insight into the structure of Portuguese colonization, the functioning of the Lusophone Colonial Empire and the the dynamics of the societies and the economy.
