- The aim of the course is to provide a general overview of 20th century literary paradigms in Brazil and of the development of the literary field in the African Portugueses speaking countries from the 19th century untill the contemporary age. Knowledge Orientates his/herself well in the heterogenous world of XXth century Portuguese language cultures and literatures. Knows the main generations, authors of the Brazilian Modernismo and is familiar with the critical and theoretical stances on national culture and identity, elaborated during the Modernist period. Is well informed regarding the comtemporary literal and cultural movements of Brazil and the Portuguese languge African countries. Knows the history and the most important authors of the African Portuguese language tradition. Skills Can read and interpret literary texts originating from Brazil and African Portuguese language countries. Is able to situate the Lusophone literatures in the global system of World literature. Understands the contemporary ways of speaking and thought of Brazil and Portuguese languege African countries. Attitudes Understands the dinamics of colonization and sees the dangers of neo-colonialism. Has a multicultural, post-colonial perspective. Is interested in the diversity of Portuguese language and it’s non-European variants. Willing to know the culture of non-European Lusophone countries. Autonomy and responsibility Can relate to the world from a non-European perspective. Accepts the plurality and heterogenity of cultural and linguistic traditions.
- Course content
- The course follows the development and the history of the Brazilian Modernismo movement from the early vanguardist manifestations (Oswald de Andrade, Mário de Andrade) and the north-eastern novel (Jorge Amado, Graciliano Ramos) untill the appearance of concrete poetry (the Campos brothers, Décio Pignatari) and the third generation of the Modernist canon (João Cabral de Melo Neto, Guimarães Rosa, Clarice Lispector). Side by side we’ll examine closly also the different African literatures of the XXth century. Since the question of cultural identity is extremly important in every Lusophone region thoughout the XXth century the course will provide also a deep insight on the problematics of national self-understanding.

- Two written examinations during the semester on previously indicated literary texts Oral or written exam
