Learning outcomes
The aim of the lesson is to introduce the cultural diversity of Iberia in a non-linguistic sense, and to present the history of particularities and unity efforts.
Course content
The theme of cultural Iberistics. Constant and changing elements of civilisation and geographical determinisms. The Romanisation of the Pyrenees. The province and peripheries of Hispania. Luzitania. Self-conception, legend, post-constructions. Viriatus, the proto-Portuguese. The Arabic heritage and the Visigothic tradition. Swévia=Portugal anterior? The united Iberian Peninsula. Centrifugal and centripetal forces. Autonomies and specificities. What becomes a "nation" in the Middle Ages? Nationalism - Administration. History of centralisation and linguistic revolts. Iberianism in Portugal. Inside and outside the Iberian Union. The generation of '98. The continuation and revival of the unitary Iberian state in the EU. The Catalan Question. The Basque Question. The Gallego Question.
