- The main aim of the course is to enable students to identify and interpret the most important dialectological and sociolinguistic phenomena in the Spanish language area and their historical antecedents at different linguistic levels (phonetics, morphosyntax, vocabulary, pragmatics), through the analysis of both spoken and written texts. The appropriate use of literature and the methodology of research are also important objectives. Prerequisite Students must have a level of Spanish equivalent to at least B2 (guest students who are not native Spanish speakers and come from institutions that do not have an IIA with the Department of Hispanic Studies at ELTE are required to present a DELE or SIELE Spanish language examination certificate). Knowledge and skills acquired or expected during the course Knowledge Students know the most important features of the territorial and social varieties of modern Spanish and the process of their development; are acquainted with the basic methods of research, interpretation and terminology of Spanish dialectology and sociolinguistics; be familiar with a number of reference works on the territorial and social varieties of Spanish. Ability Students are able to identify and interpret the forms and structures specific to the different varieties of Spanish and to relate them to normative language use, using the available literature; are able to read with a high level of comprehension scientific studies on Spanish dialectology. Attitude Students strive to acquire new knowledge and skills; aim for continuous self-education using available technologies and specialized literature, among other tools; are open and curious about the Spanish language and its regional and social varieties. Autonomy and responsibility Students are committed to autonomous, intensive learning; carry out learning tasks independently; take responsibility for their own work, progress, achievements and failures.
- Course content
- The course will give a brief overview of how the Spanish language developed and how it was introduced to the Americas. We will then review the major European and American dialects and examine their phonetic, morphosyntactic and lexical characteristics, as well as the impact of language contact on Spanish.
- Assessment method
- An essay and/or written exam; grading 1 to 5.
