- The aim of the course is to introduce students to the most outstanding works of 20th-century Spanish theatre, each embodying a characteristic trend of the period. The theoretical background of the lessons will be provided by listening to lectures by Spanish experts and literary scholars (from the Fundación Juan March's digital collection), analysing literature and then using this literature to analyse specific works.
- Course content
- Introduction. Characteristics and trends of 20th century Spanish theatre. - Critical evaluation of Jacinto Benavente and his work. Commedia dell'arte and Benavente's Los intereses creados. - Carlos Arniches and the so-called género chico (as well as the sainete and the farsa). Arniches' journey from the género chico to the grotesque tragedies. La senorita de Trevélez and the film adaptation (Calle mayor) based on the work. - The theatre of Ramón María del Valle-Inclán. His individual technical innovation, the esperpento. Analysis of Romance de lobos cm. - Federico García Lorca and works considered to be a trilogy of the Spanish world (specifically Andalusia) (Yerma, The Bloodhound, Bernarda Alba's House). Analysis of a surrealist work (El público). - The mixture of fantasy and reality in Alejandro Casona's plays. Analysis of Los árboles mueren de pie. - Antonio Buero Vallejo and the "new Spanish drama". El tragaluz and Historia de una escalera.
- Assessment method
- Students are required to actively participate in all classes, prepare for a lecture given by a foreign expert or literary critic at the Fundación Juan March, and give a presentation on the work of one of the authors studied during the semester. Finally, they will present a final paper on the knowledge acquired during the semester. Their end-of-semester grade will be based on the sum of all their results (which are worth a total of 150 points).
