- Students who complete the course successfully are well-informed and well-oriented in the field of Spanish dialectology and sociolinguistic variety and are interested in the cultural background of the Spanish language. They can place the Spanish language among the languages of the world. They are familiar with the regional and social heterogeneity of the Spanish-speaking regions. They are aware of the academic linguistic norms and the non-normative uses. Prior knowledge necessary for successful completion of the course - At least B2 level proficiency in Spanish (visiting students from institutions that do not have an inter-institutional agreement with the ELTE Hispanic Studies Department and have been nominated to another department are required to present a DELE or SIELE language exam certificate); - Familiarity with basic linguistic topics and methodology; knowledge of the most important phonetic, phonological, morphosyntactic, and semantic concepts/phenomena Knowledge and skills acquired or expected during the course A) Knowledge Students are familiar with the most important features of the territorial and social versions of today's Spanish are aware of the nature of the cultivated language norm and a number of non-normative phenomena are familiar with the basic research and interpretation methods of Spanish descriptive linguistics, and are familiar with its specialist terminology. B) Ability Students are able to place Spanish among the languages of the world; are able to use the relevant literature autonomously by interpreting the assigned texts individually. C) Attitude Students strive to acquire new knowledge and skills aim for continuous self-education using available technologies, among other tools. understand and accept the diversity and variability of both European and American cultural phenomena, and compare them responsibly to Hungarian specifics. D) Autonomy and responsibility Students are committed to intensive learning. perform learning-related tasks independently. take responsibility for their own work, development, achievements and failures.
- Course content
- Clarification of basic sociolinguistic and dialectological concepts; the current status of the Spanish language; the antecedents of the development of the modern language; the development of the current dialectal situation; the role of linguistic institutions and the development of the educated norm; the characteristics of colloquial Spanish and slang; technical languages; other languages and dialects of Spain (Andalusian, Aragonese, Asturian, Galician, Catalan, Basque); Spanish in America; Spanish-based Creole languages; Sephardic Spanish.
- Assessment method
- Written exam (three dates during the exam period, the third of which is also a resit exam, which applicants must take into account when registering for the last opportunity). The exam consists of two parts: Part A: a test consisting of 20-30 true/false and multiple-choice questions (15-20 minutes) - 20-30 points; Part B: an exam consisting of various tasks requiring detailed answers (approx. 60 minutes) - 80-70 points. Towards the end of the semester, sample questions will be presented and solved on one of the occasions.
