- The aim of the course is to familiarise students with the generations of the Spanish literature of the 20th Century, the most important works of the most prominent writers, and to analyse literary texts from a concrete point of view. This also requires a summary of the main literary, genre, aesthetic and cultural antecedents. Prerequisite Students must have a level of Spanish equivalent to at least B2 (guest students who are not native Spanish speakers and come from institutions that do not have an IIA with the Department of Hispanic Studies at ELTE are required to present a DELE or SIELE Spanish language examination certificate). Knowledge and skills acquired or expected during the course A) Knowledge Students have ● knowledge about the historical and cultural background of the Spanish Literature of the 20th century, and the most important antecedents. ● knowledge about the main intellectual and artistic trends of the period, the most important writers and their works ● at least B2 level of usable language skills and intercultural communicative competence in the subject area ● knowledge of the sources of information that can be used in the teaching and learning of Spanish and how to access them, especially the Internet and new tools B) Ability Students are capable to ● use the Spanish language fluently, correctly and confidently in this specific context; and read, understand and analyse literary works in Spanish ● apply their knowledge of the Spanish language correctly and according to the specific context ● mediate between cultures and develop intercultural competence C) Attitude Students are ● interested in Spanish Culture and Literature ● ready to acquire new knowledge and skills ● committed to progress through the use of available technological tools, among others ● realistic about their role in the teaching of the Spanish language and culture ● willing to develop students' ability to think reasonably, based on knowledge D) Autonomy and responsibility Students ● are committed to intensive learning ● carry out learning-related tasks independently, read and analyse literary texts in Spanish ● take responsibility for their own work, development, achievements and failures
- Course content
- The periods of Spanish literature in the 20th century (the 98th generation, the 1914 generation, the 27th generation, emigration literature, the post-civil war era, post-1975 literature) and its main antecedents (e.g., Golden Age literature). After general characteristics, a detailed description of the 98th and 27th generations, and the work of their most important authors. Reading of texts, seminar work.
- Assessment method
- Students are expected to actively participate in all classes, to prepare a lecture on a topic set at the beginning of the semester, to present a final paper at the end of the semester and to present a short seminar paper on a topic of their choice. At the end of the semester, they will receive a mark for all their results together. Grading 1-5.
