Learning outcomes

To introduce students to the rudiments and basic terms of geography, demographics, economy, history, politics and culture of Estonia, to outline and establish knowledge required in the Estonian studies programme. a) knowledge – The student is knowledgeable about the most important branches and the most influential representatives of Estonian high culture, – is able to place Estonian culture in a European and universal cultural context, – sees its position and role. b) skills – The student is capable of interpreting Estonian culture in a European and wider context. – The student can mediate the values of Estonian culture. c) attitudes – The student is open to Estonian and other cultural communities. d) autonomy and responsiblility – The student develops a view that aids him/her in understanding other cultures and in improving his/her skills independently.

Course content

Facts and basic information about Estonia (geography, demographics, economy). Estonian people and their relationship to nature; environmental protection in Estonia. A brief outline of Estonian history; changes in the way of life in Estonia. The brief history of Hungarian-Estonian relations. The position of Estonian literature in world literature; Estonian literature in Hungary. Estonian culture in a nutshell: music, architecture, fine arts and crafts, film, theatre, radio and television, cultural magazines. Estonian cartoons, documentaries and their authors. The history of Estonian Song Festival. Estonian sport. Current issues of Estonian politics.

oral exam.
