- a) knowledge – Acquaintance with the most important periods and phenomena of the Finnish folk poetry and of the 13–20th century and contemporary Finnish literature, with their generally accepted characteristics and data, as well as with the most important texts and authors of the Finnish literary tradition. – Familiarity with the main characteristics of the different communicative forms, genres, historical processes and significant periods of Finnish literature, with regard to their European and cultural contexts. b) skills The student – is able to interpret the literary peculiarities of the phenomena of Finnish literature, as well as their inner connections within the literary tradition, and their historical embeddedness. – is able to understand the role of Finnish literary traditions in the national identity discourse, and to place these phenomena into the relevant European context. – is able to read and analyze literary works comprehensively, to discuss them in different registers in a clear, elaborate style, observing the rules of the given genre. c) attitudes The student – understands and accepts the diversity of peoples and cultural values. – is open to Finnish as well as to any other cultural community. – understands and accepts that linguistic and literary phenomena are historically and socially defined and variable. – is capable of and pursues self-education in selected fields of literary studies. d) autonomy and responsibility The student – develops an attitude that helps them to understand other cultures, and to develop themselves and their environment. – makes use of their knowledge in self-education, self-knowledge. – represents consciously the methods by which they work in the field of literature, and accepts the different methodological features of other disciplines. – feels responsible for promoting Finnish literature.
- Course content
- The genres of Finnish folk poetry, the connection between folklore and nationalization, the circumstances of the birth of the Kalevala and its influence. Introduction to the basic features, main periods and cultural history of 13–20th century and contemporary Finnish literature, focusing on the organic development of Finnish literature and the social foundations of the literary process, the history of the audience and the forums of expression, and the most important authors and works of the eras in question.

- oral exam (grades: 1 to 5).
