Learning outcomes

a) knowledge – Acquaintance with the most important natural and economic characteristics of Finland, the linguistic, religious and social composition of its population, the main eras and events of its history. – Acquaintance with the most important achievements and representatives of Finnish culture and science. – A basic knowledge of Finnish people, their customs, and the verbal and non-verbal forms of expression pertaining to them. b) skills The student – is able to put the achievements and representatives of Finnish culture and science in a wider – European and universal – context and to evaluate them in such a light. – can talk insightfully about Finnish culture and conveys its values. – can adapt to Finnish customs, understands and conveys the pertaining message. c) attitudes The student – understands and accepts the diversity of peoples and cultural values, is open to Finnish as well as to any other cultural community. – supports the linguistic, religious and social diversity of Finnish and European identity – from a historical as well as a contemporary perspective d) autonomy and responsibility The student – develops an attitude that helps them to understand other cultures and to constantly develop themselves. – makes use of their knowledge in self-education, self-knowledge. – feels responsible for promoting Finnish culture. – works consciously to develop bilateral cultural relations.

Course content

Finland’s geography and wildlife, the impact of the geographical environment on lifestyle and mentality. Geographical and historical areas, demographics, natural conditions, economic opportunities, way of thinking and speech. Finnish culture: literature, music, fine arts, theater, architecture and industrial design – especially regarding the 21th century. Finnish popular culture, lifestyle, gastronomy and cultural behavior. Differences between Finnish and Hungarian culture and mentality.

Assessment method

oral exam (grades: 1 to 5).
