Learning outcomes

a) knowledge - Have a comprehensive knowledge of the fundamental facts, tendencies and limits of the subjects of discourse studies and stylistics. - Know the key correlations and theories of discourse studies and stylistics, as well as the related terminology. - Know methods for knowledge acquisition and problem solving based on the main theories of discourse studies and stylistics. - Possess the knowledge required for entry into a master programme in the same or another field of study. - Have a comprehensive knowledge of the legal rules and ethical standards applying to their field of study or work. - Possess the knowledge, skills and attitudes that link their profession to a certain area of civic literacy. b) skills - Able to work in jobs their qualifications give access to. - Capable of carrying out an elementary analysis of the disciplines which constitute the body of knowledge of their field of study or work, and to synthetically describe and adequately evaluate correlations. - Able to apply the procedures and main theories of discourse studies and stylistics, as well as the related terminology, when carrying out their tasks. - Able to understand and use the Hungarian and foreign language literature of their field, both online and in print, and know how to find and process information efficiently in their field of study or work. - Able to understand and interpret texts, including those containing visual signs, typographical marks and icons, as well as charts, data series, visual texts, moving and still images, maps and diagrams. c) attitudes - Accept and genuinely stand for the social role of their profession and the essence of its relationship to the world. - Open to genuinely communicating and disseminating the general way of thinking and basic features of the practical operation of their profession. - Willing to get acquainted with, accept and genuinely communicate the professional and technological developments and innovations in discourse studies and stylistics. - Aim for self-education as a means of attaining professional objectives. - Take full account of legal rules and ethical standards in decision making, even when decisions need to be made by using complex approaches or in unexpected situations. - Strive for cooperation with others whenever possible in problem solving. d) autonomy and responsibility - Capable of thinking over independently the comprehensive, fundamental questions of their profession and of elaborating them by using given sources, even in unexpected decision making situations. - Rely on professional guidance in thinking over general and specific professional issues and in elaborating them by using given sources. - Work autonomously, subjecting their activities to critical review and ongoing correction. - Responsibly participate in formulating and justifying professional views. - Responsibly embrace the fundamental views of discourse studies and stylistics. - Engage in further self-learning or participate in organised further training in order to develop their existing skills and to acquire new competences that may enable them to take a responsible position within an organisation.

Course content

1. The functional approach to language. Communication, discourse space, perspective, context. 2. The nature of discourse; discourse, language, and linguistic activity. The physical manifestation of discourse, its procedural structure, its summerizing sturcture (sense). Coreference as structure and process. Discourse topic. Monologue, paragraph. Topic continuity and contiguum of processes. Dialogue. 3. The nature of style. Speech situation, behaviour, and style. The stíyistic potential of parts of speech (noun, verb, adjective). The stylistics of the sentence. Metaphor and metonymy. Figures. Archaism. The stylistic structure of discourses. Historical style types of literature.
