Learning outcomes

To give students an overview of Finnish history from the beginning to the present day.

Course content

Prehistory. The emergence of Christianity and the age of the Crusades. Finland and the Finns in the Middle Ages. Sweden becoming a great power. The last century of the Swedish era. Autonomous Grand Duchy of the Russian Empire. The development of the national movement in the second half of the 19th century. The "years of repression" and the renewal of the National Assembly. The establishment of independence and the civil war. The era between the two world wars. Finland in World War II. The "years of danger" and Paasikivi's politics. Kekkonen and active neutrality. The cooperation of the Nordic states and the Finnish economic miracle. Finland in the EU.
