The course aims to: - introduce students the possibility of analysing pilgrimage as an important social phenomenon from a multidisciplinary perspective; - provide students with the opportunity to become more familiar with case studies combining the approaches and methodologies of different disciplines, their potential and to become receptive to this research attitude through discussions related to the topic of each lesson; - prepare students to apply effectively the different interdisciplinary approaches and methodologies of pilgrimage research in their own independent research and analysis.

Course content

Course description: Pilgrimage, i.e. visiting sacred places, is not only a long-standing religious phenomenon, but also an important, multifaceted and, above all, popular component of modern culture. It is no coincidence that in recent decades it has been the focal point of research in several social and cultural sciences, such as religious history, religious studies, sociology of religion, folklore studies and ethnography, cultural and social anthropology, and tourism research, to name but a few. The course will provide a comprehensive overview of pilgrimage including but not restricted to a historical perspective, both as a global religious phenomenon across several religious systems and as a non-religious, secular one. During the semester, we will review aspects, methods, key findings and the most controversial issues of social and cultural research on the topic in the 19th-21st centuries, both in the domestic and international academic arenas. Finally, we will also address the interferences that arise between pilgrimage research and the socio-cultural practices of pilgrimage, whether religious-spiritual or secular in nature. SCHEDULE 1. Assessment method

- Class attendance - up to 3 absences (10%) - Reading and discussion of the compulsory literature assigned to the class topics from lesson to lesson (50%) - Making and delivering a presentation on a chosen subject of the student's own research on pilgrimage (40%)
