- Overview of the Carpathian Basin, the historical and present-day regional divisions and ethnic groups of Hungary.
- Course content
- Content of education: The training focuses on the formation and evolution of ethnographic landscapes and historical regions. It examines the coexistence of Hungarians and other nationalities in the Carpathian Basin, and explores ethnic, linguistic and religious diversity, as well as the various forms of interethnic relations and cultural interactions that exist. The regional characteristics of folk culture are analysed, including the spatial division of farming, lifestyles, settlements, architectural forms, customs, rituals and identities. Particular focus is given to peripheral areas and contact zones, the ethnographic aspects of mobility and migration, and the interactions between rural and urban spaces, as well as contemporary issues of ethnographic heritage. These include the effects of heritage protection, regionalism, tourism and globalisation on the cultural heritage of the Carpathian Basin. Main topics and issues: 1. The Carpathian Basin as a historical and cultural ethnographic region** The geographical features and historical processes of the Carpathian Basin, and their role in the formation of ethnographic regional differentiation. 2. The coexistence of Hungarians and ethnic minorities in the Carpathian Basin** Ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversity; interethnic relations and cultural interactions from an ethnographic perspective. 3. Ethnographic landscapes and landscape-historical regions in the Hungarian-speaking area The concept of the ethnographic landscape, major landscape types, their formation, and historical transformations. 4. Regional characteristics of vernacular culture in the Carpathian Basin Spatial differences in subsistence practices, ways of life, settlement patterns, the built environment, and material culture. 5. The spatial differentiation of customs, traditions, and identities Ethnographic interpretations of festivals, rituals, symbolic spaces, and regional identities. 6. The ethnography of borderlands, frontier spaces, and transitional regions Border areas, contact zones, and cultural transitions within the Carpathian Basin. 7. Mobility and migration in the ethnographic history of the Carpathian Basin Cultural consequences of seasonal migration, labor migration, settlement, and forced displacement. 8. Ethnographic characteristics of rural and urban spaces in the region Interactions between peasant and urban cultures, urbanization processes, and spatial practices illustrated through regional examples. 9. Landscape use, environmental adaptation, and ethnographic heritage Traditional ecological knowledge, landscape transformation, and sustainable practices in the regions of the Carpathian Basin. 10. The ethnographic heritage of the Carpathian Basin in the present Cultural heritage preservation, regionalism, tourism, and the impacts of globalization on ethnographic values.
- Assessment method
- Examination and evaluation system: colloquium grade. The basic principles of student assessment are laid down in the regulations of the Faculty of Humanities at ELTE, which stipulate that, given the nature of the knowledge and skills imparted, the lecturer shall select the means of assessing student work. The colloquium grade is generally based on the assessment of written and/or oral work, which the student can obtain individually or as a member of a group.
