- Art historical interpretation: some methodological approaches The course explores a few methods and approaches employed by art historians in dealing with works of art depending on the specific historical paradigm of art historical research such as “history of styles” (“Stilgeschichte”), iconology, aesthetics of reception, social history of art, art historical hermeneutics and visual studies (“Bildwissenschaft”). I would stress the importance of linguistic and semiotic models in describing the inner logic and cohesive structure of these paradigmatic frameworks. In order to achieve a better in-deptht understanding of the manifolded differencies between these highly complex approaches, as a case study, I will use some principal interpretations of one particular painting, i.e. Diego Velázquez’ Las Meninas. Students are expected to read the assigned texts, to give a short presentation of one of the aspects to be discussed and to participate in the discussion. On the first meeting I’ll give a detailed bibliography and we discuss the assigments.
