Oktatás célja
The aim of the lecture is to examine how the notion of cultural heritage, originally institutionalized as an administrative concept, evolved from its establishment to its global institutionalization and, subsequently, as a result of its criticism up to the 1990s. This complex process, beginning with the changes engendered by the French socio-political and the English industrial revolutions, through which the legal concept of heritage became a key reference in political and cultural representations is interpreted by the means of conceptual history. It is followed by a comparative analysis of national heritages from the emergence of the concept of heritage to its international institutionalization, which took place within the framework of UNESCO’s concept and practice of ’world heritage’. The objective of the lecture is to acquaint students with the most important documents of the international regulation of cultural heritage, the socio-institutional-cultural context of their origin, and the legal regulation of cultural transmission until the last decade of the 20th century. In addition, students should be able to analyse international cultural heritage legislation as an object of social sciences and humanities.
Tantárgy tartalma
The highly complex and diversified phenomena of cultural heritage is interpreted as a suitable notion for social sciences through the model of ’cultural heritage regimes. The lecture covers the history of the first and second regimes, which lasted from the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries to the late 1960s. It deals with the development of the concept of national heritage in the 19th century, then with the social history of the birth of the World Heritage List, and with the legal formulation, practice and management of world heritage. Special attention is given to the Anglo-French origin of the concept of heritage and its perseverance in the UNESCO ’world heritage’ discourse. Monument and cultural goods conservation practices with a long tradition in the West (such as the German or the Italian) as well as other traditional preservations of the past (Japanese, Indian, etc.), which were forced to redefine themselves in comparison with the heritage discourse in the second half of the 20th century, are discussed from the perspective of the ’world heritage’ discourse
