- Oktatás célja
- Modern national identity and cultural heritage are organically linked. During the course, students will get acquainted with the different perceptions of the nation, the historical processes of nation-building, and the role of cultural heritage in shaping national identity. They acquire the historical and other background knowledge necessary for the preservation and transmission of the values of the national heritage.
- Tantárgy tartalma
- The course provides a detailed overview of key theories and debates on nationalism and the formation and nature of the modern nation. It presents the objective and subjective, primordialist, modernist and constructivist, ethnosymbolist, and postmodern approaches of the nation. It discusses the modern nation-building processes and the role of cultural heritage in this processes in a broader historical context. In addition to the more general theoretical models, some specific cases will be discussed in more detail (primarily the English, American, French, German and Central European regions - with a special emphasis on the Hungarian case) and thus examine with a comparatist approach the formation of nations and that of national traditions.
