Oktatás célja
The three essential aims of the course complete each other. First, we will examine the concept of urban heritage through four cases: Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and Cracow. Second, the students will acquire general knowledge about the history and heritagization of these cities, that is to say, the quasi “national capitals” of Habsburg Central Europe. Third, the course will help the students to understand the manners of transfer between the national culture and the common culture of humanity through the study of cities as hubs for international cultural exchange.
Tantárgy tartalma
The seminar focuses on the particular characteristics of Central Europe by means of the region’s cities. We approach the concept of Central Europe from theoretical writings. The past, present as well as the heritage of all the four cities are closely linked with the legacy of Austro-Hungarian Empire and industrialization, thus the emphasis of the course is placed on the 19th century. Although, the investigation of Habsburg Central Europe lends itself to be a way of thematizing the phenomena of urbanisation and, what is more, the economical, social and cultural transformations of the 19th century. The comparison of Vienna, Budapest, Prague, and Cracow can reveal peculiarities which laid in the heart of the operation of this empire. Examining these dimensions helps the students to explore the past as well as the present of Central European cities.
Számonkérés és értékelés
Practice grade. The basic frame for evaluating student performance of the course determined by the university's code of conduct. According to this document, the instructor can determine the means of evaluation of the course depending on the nature of the field of knowledge and skills presented at the course. A practice grade usually takes the form of an evaluation based on written and/or presented works related to the student's work at a seminar individually or as a member of a student team.
