Oktatás célja
This course provides an introduction to pragmatism, one of the most important philosophical traditions in the 20th century. While the focus is on the philosophy of language, we also touch upon several related topics from metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of science etc. The format is reading seminar with close readings and discussions of a main text on each occasion (with a further non-mandatory text for most occasions). The aim of the course is to understand how formal and non-formal methods in logic and the philosophy of language contributes to central problems of classical philosophy in a unique way that the pragmatist philosophical attitude offers. Course completion consists of taking part in the discussions (40%) and writing up a 5-page long essay on one of the topics discussed (60%).
