- Knowledge: The students have C1 level knowledge of German. They have a detailed understanding of the theoretical problems of German linguistics and their historical context. They understand the procedures for the analysis of German linguistic phenomena. They have comprehensive knowledge of the traditional and electronic resources of German linguistics. They have a thorough and comprehensive knowledge of the written and oral, academical and public, popular genres and contexts of the field. They have thorough knowledge of at least one subtopic in their chosen field. They have knowledge of the research methods needed to understand and explain the deeper interrelations of the German language. Skills: The students are able to present their knowledge in scientific forums and to plan and carry out tasks independently and at a high professional level. They are able to critically evaluate current research and academic work in linguistics and interdisciplinary fields. They are able to evaluate different theoretical approaches and develop independent critique. They are able to apply their knowledge of linguistic phenomena in practice. They are able to upgrade their knowledge and develop new skills. They are able to perform work requiring an in-depth knowledge of German. They are able to communicate effectively in German. Attitude: Students have a high level of motivation, commitment, and quality awareness in German. They are open to interdisciplinary approaches in their chosen field. - Course content
- The aim of the lecture is to provide a chronological overview of the different linguistic trends and paradigm shifts dominating (German) linguistic research. After the different schools of structuralism, which is presumably already familiar from previous studies, the framework and aims of generative linguistics, the pragmatic turn, cognitive linguistics, construction grammar, etc. will be discussed. The lecture will introduce the main concepts, terms, and models of the different trends, highlighting their pioneering ideas.
