Learning outcomes
The aim of the seminar is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the most essential types of texts used in modern business correspondence and written communication, such as requests for quotes, orders, complaints, notices of termination, memos, reminders, and minutes, among others. The practice-oriented seminar also aims to develop students’ knowledge of German business language as a language variety and to enhance their competencies in written communication and listening comprehension in this field.
Course content
With regard to the methods used, the study of business correspondence text types begins with the joint analysis of authentic texts and is conducted using an inductive approach. In the second step, after mastering a linguistic model used to describe and analyze text types, a detailed description of the text types and an awareness of their prototypical features follow. This is followed by exercises related to the production of specific texts.
Assessment method
seminar grade (1-5) The seminar is graded on a five-point scale based on seminar papers, closed-book exams, presentations, weekly homework assignments, or other work. The seminar leader will announce the requirements for completion during the first class.
