Course content
The lecture will provide a comprehensive overview of the key issues and developmental trends in the history of the German language and the multi-level system of interrelationships involved. Thus, it contributes to the causal and functional elucidation of some of the features of the system and the use of the present-day German language. In the introductory outline, some general theories of linguistic change are presented, as well as the theories, methods, models and results that characterise the history of the research on German historical linguistics. In addition to the internal linguistic changes at each level of the language, the so-called ’external linguistic history’ and the relationship between the two are also given a prominent place.
Assessment method
oral/written exam based on the materials and compulsory readings of the lecture.
